A limit switch is a normally closed switch, designed to open when a set temperature is reached.  These switches are commonly used in gas and electric furnaces to control power to gas valves and elements.  Temperature listed is Fahrenheit.  

Temperature differential refers to the temperature difference between the point that the contacts open and reclose.  For example if the limit switch is marked L150-20, that would indicate that the switch would open at 150º and close at 130º.

Limit switches are electrical devices that are not returnable.  Defective merchandise is replaced with an identical item.
